Hugo Six has joined the lead producing team of The Secret Life of Bees, a new musical by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (Clyde’s, Sweat), composer Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening), and lyricist Susan Birkenhead (Jelly’s Last Jam).
With our producing partners (Sonia Friedman, Lauren Shuler Donner, Marianne Mills, andRobert Cohen), we enhanced the show’s UK premiere at the Almeida Theatre in London in April 2023. Whitney White directed the production.
Set in 1964 South Carolina, The Secret Life of Bees is based on the best-selling novel by Sue Monk Kidd. Lily, a white teenager, is running from her violent father; Rosaleen, her Black caregiver, is fighting for her right to vote. Fleeing their small town, they seek salvation at a remote honeybee farm run by the remarkable Boatwright sisters. But while this mesmerizing new world of spirituality and fellowship awakens something new in both Rosaleen and Lily, can they truly escape their pasts?
