In a repressive boarding school, four boys discover a banned copy of Shakespeare’s classic play Romeo and Juliet. Forbidden to read it by day, they begin a secret enactment by night that shatters the boundaries of the world they know. The boys test the waters of adulthood, experimenting with the roles and rules of becoming men, and their shared experience changes them profoundly. Shakespeare’s R&J was originally produced in New York City in 1998 to great acclaim. The success continued as an expanded production traveled to the UK where it wowed audiences at the Bath Shakespeare Festival in 2003. Shakespeare’s R&J then transferred to the Arts Theatre in London’s West End where it was named number one of The Independent’s“Five Best Plays in London.” Since then director and adaptor Joe Calarco’s visionary production has garnered raves the world over for its inventive re-imagining of Shakespeare’s ultimate love story.
